Cast Iron Skillet Trout Recipe for Camp

The Best Fish Dish You Will Cook in Camp

Fresh trout, hot cast iron and a little butter is all you need. This recipe comes together in under 20 minutes and works over a camp stove or an open fire.

Ingredients

  • 2 whole trout, cleaned
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • Fresh thyme or dill
  • Salt and cracked pepper
  • Flour for dusting

Step-by-Step

  1. Pat the trout completely dry — dry fish means crispy skin.
  2. Dust lightly with flour, salt and pepper.
  3. Heat your cast-iron skillet over medium heat with the butter until it foams.
  4. Lay the fish in, skin side down, and cook 3–4 minutes without moving.
  5. Flip once, add lemon slices and herbs, and cook another 3 minutes.
Pro tipRest the fish on a plate for two minutes before serving. It finishes cooking and the juices settle.

Serve It Up

Serve over foil-grilled potatoes with a squeeze of fresh lemon. Pair it with campfire corn and you have a meal you will talk about until next season.
