Trout hold in places where they can eat without spending energy. That means seams, eddies and the quiet water behind rocks — places where current delivers food. Fish the structure, not the open water.

The Seam Is the Superhighway

Where fast water meets slow water, there is a line called the seam. Insects drift down it, and trout line up beside it. Cast your fly just ahead of the seam and let it drift naturally.

• Work bottom-up: fish the lies closest to you first.
• Change depth before you change flies.
• Move slowly — trout spook on shadows and vibration.

Cover the Pocket Water

In a freestone stream, trout hold in pockets behind boulders and logs. A short, accurate cast into each pocket beats a long cast across the pool. Mend your line so the fly drifts drag-free.

When to Move On

Give each piece of water about ten good drifts. If nothing shows interest, the fish are either not there or not eating. Move up the river and repeat — covering water is how you find fish.
